Jelani Cobb, the acclaimed journalist and Dean of the Columbia Journalism School, has just published a new collection of essays, "Three or More Is a Riot: Notes on How We Got Here." The book collects essays beginning in 2012 with the killing of Travyon Martin in Florida. It traces the rise of Donald Trump and the right's growing embrace of white nationalism as well as the historic racial justice protests after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020. “What we're seeing is a kind reactionary push to try to return the nation to the status quo ante, to undo the kind of demographic change, literally at gunpoint, as we are pushing people of color out of the country by force,” says Cobb. On this Friday night episode of The Joy Reid Show, Joy. breaks down the far right's obsession with creating an American monarchy ruled by tech oligarchs, oil barons and populated by conservative serfs. We break down the history of Turning Point USA, The Daily Wire and the Groypers, laying out how lead Groyper and nazi apologist Nick Fuentes is emerging as the true heir to the maga cult. Our guests include Dr. Heidi Anderson, president of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, who is suing a former university employee who publicly accused her of plagiarism, and her attorney James Walker, fighting back against a now common right wing strategy to take down Black leaders. In hour two, we talk with former PIX11 anchor Narmeen Choudhury about how Democratic socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will fight the Trump oligarchy and former Starbucks barista Michelle Eisen, who is among those fighting for fair wages and treatment for Starbucks employees, even as the company CEO rakes in tens of millions of dollars in compensation and many baristas need to collect SNAP.
