2026 U.S. Senate campaign
On January 22, 2026, Nixon launched her campaign for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2026 United States Senate special election in Florida.[17] She joined the Democratic Socialists of America and Working Families Party in 2026.[18] Her campaign pledges included universal health care,[b] higher taxes on the wealthy and a minimum wage of $25 per hour.[6] She defeated Alex Vindman in the primary in what was seen as a significant upset.[20][21] Nixon has been noted in national press along with US Senate candidates Juliana Stratton, Marquita Bradshaw, and Catherine Fleming Bruce, and gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms as notable Black women who are running in the 2026 general election.[22][23][24] Nixon set the record for first senate candidate nominated by a major party for United States Senate who is a member of the DSA.[18]
Book store
In 2024, Nixon founded a bookstore and coffee shop in Jacksonville's Northside called Cafe Resistance, which serves as a community-focused space for local organizing, after-school educational and recreational activities for children and students, and promoting Black history and culture through literature and storytelling, in opposition to state repression of historical accounts of African-American resistance.[28]
Florida Public Service Union
Nixon is currently Director for the Florida Public Service Union's (FPSU) Higher Education Campaign[29] and was previously the Florida state field director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), of which FPSU is an affiliate.[30][31]
Since 2022, she has also been the executive director of Florida For All, a coalition of six different organizations, including SEIU, that works to promote voter rights and enfran
In June of 2026, Nixon joined the DSA. When asked about this by WLRN (Miami public television), Nixon replied, "I don’t fully align with anybody’s full platform 100%, not even the Democratic Party."[35] Interviewed by WMNF, she also said of the DSA, "the reason I joined the organization was because they believe we should have access to quality healthcare. They believe that we should have quality access to quality housing and fully funded public schools."[36]
Nixon has called to raise the federal minimum wage.[37]
Foreign policy
Nixon is opposed to the 2026 Iran war.[38][39] She criticized the war's cost, and said it was "jeopardizing the lives of American service members and Iranian civilians."[39]
Nixon said in August 2026 that she would have voted to cut $3.3 billion in aid to Israel.[39] She said, "We cannot continue to send money to countries that are violating international law, that are violating human rights."[39]
Healthcare
On the topic of healthcare policy, Nixon's long-term plan proposes Medicare for All, a type of universal health care.[40][41] Her short-term plan is to reintroduce the enhanced tax credit under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).[40][41] She said, "If we reestablish the funding that was cut, we can demand that these insurance companies drive down their premium costs because it impacted not just the ACA marketplace; it impacted private insurers, too."[40]
Immigration
Nixon said she supports border security as well as "clear and compassionate pathways for citizenship."[39] Her 2026 campaign platform calls for abolishing ICE and rebuilding immigration enforcement.[39]
Data centers
Nixon's stance on data centers is that a federal moratorium should be imposed on new data center construction until guardrails are established to protect communities and the environment.[42][43]
One Big Beautiful Bill Act
Nixon said she would vote to repeal the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). She said, "It gave those tax breaks to those billionaires and to the ultra-rich, and we need to make sure they pay what they owe to help us with our Medicare for All."[38][44] She has criticized OBBBA's impact on Medicaid, housing, and hospital programs.[44][37]In June of 2026, Nixon joined the DSA.
