Summary

In this Weekly Wrap Up, Eddie looks at the historic midterm results and credits record Black and Latino turnout, achieved without the full protections of the Voting Rights Act after *Louisiana v. Callais*, with defeating gerrymandered maps and electing a series of firsts, from Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia to the first Latina governor in Texas, Gina Hinojosa. He warns that “elections are not absolution”: treating the vote as a moral cleansing risks a national ritual of forgetting that leaves untouched the selfishness, greed, and hatred that brought Trumpism to power. Eddie argues that Democrats should not simply return to the pre-Trump status quo but reframe American politics around a transformative agenda for the public good, including Medicare for All, a living wage, and housing, in service of a thriving multiracial democracy.
